No Tongues for Quiet People, as captured by Ina Foster-Goodrich

No Tongues for Quiet People is post-punk/post-hardcore for introverts and anxious minds. The band formed in 2015 as part of Kalamazoo’s thriving DIY community. Formerly known as “Vines,” the four friends have spent years carving a unique niche by playing sets in basements and dive bars all across Michigan and the greater Midwest. In that time, they released the EP Circle of Stones and were privileged to play with acts like Horse Jumper of Love, Kal Marks, and Pile. In 2019, they changed their name and announced their first LP, Joint Fortune, due for independent release on January 5, 2020. The record’s first single, “Corridor,” premiered in November on Post-Trash, and its second single, “Arthritis,” premiered in December on The Alternative.

Anchored by songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist Max Murray (he/him), No Tongues builds their songs out of sincerity, allegory, and a healthy dose of fuzz. Guitarist Matt Amstutz (they/them) layers each track with intricate, calculated riffs and precisely calibrated tone, while Evan Asher (he/him) balances the sound with depth, support, and rhythm on bass guitar. Drummer Dylan Cooper (he/him) rounds out the lineup by oscillating between restraint and noise, pushing the mood of any given track from contemplative to frenetic before pulling it back again. The resulting sound paces between the pillars of post-punk and post-hardcore, refusing to settle down.
